The decision to pursue surrogacy is not necessarily an easy one. There are many things to consider when figuring out how to become a surrogate mother, including whether or not you’re ready, what your support system looks like, what kind of experience you’re looking for, what you are hoping for in the intended parents, etc. And this is just the tip of the iceberg. We have written a post on questions to ask yourself before becoming a surrogate mother. Choice Surrogacy is here to assist in exploring all of these important questions right along with you.
In addition to asking yourself these important questions, though, it is also important to consider whether or not you meet the minimum qualifications to become a surrogate mother. These are important considerations for becoming a Choice surrogate. This post will explore some of these qualifications in detail. You can visit our qualifications page for additional information.
How to Become A Surrogate Mother
Once you have started on the journey of figuring out how to become a surrogate mother, you will start by asking yourself some important questions. The next most important step is seeing if you meet the qualifications for surrogacy. You don’t want to get ahead of yourself if you are likely to run into an issue that will disqualify you from surrogacy. If you are looking to become a Choice surrogate, then, at a minimum, you should meet the following broad criteria:
- You want to help bring in a new member to a family
- You’re organized
- You enjoy mental and physical health
- You’re open to new and diverse experiences
- You have a strong system of support
- You are very much committed to the process
If this sounds like you, then you are certainly on the right track! Meeting these qualifications is imperative when deciding how to become a surrogate mother. However, these qualifications are pretty broad. While these are absolutely fundamental to become a surrogate mother, Choice Surrogacy also includes some more specific qualifications to consider.
Have Had A Positive Pregnancy Experience
Many surrogates have already had experience with pregnancy. When this is the case, it’s important that your experiences with pregnancy were positive and enjoyable. Choice Surrogacy is looking for someone who has already delivered one or more children and has had positive experiences throughout. This includes pregnancies with minimum complications.
Non-Drug User and Non-Smoker
When assessing someone’s mental and physical health, one of the most important factors to consider is substance abuse. It is imperative that surrogates do not use any drugs, and this very much includes tobacco products. Indeed, it is important for a surrogate to live in a non-smoking home. This also includes no history of arrests or records of substance abuse.
Must Be U.S. Citizen
In order to qualify as a Choice surrogate, you must be a citizen of the United States. This is for legal reasons.
Tubal Ligation Is Not An Issue
Tubal ligation is the process where the fallopian tubes are tied off to prevent pregnancy. This procedure can be reversed and does not disqualify you for surrogacy.
Other Important Qualifications
- Between the ages of 21 and 38
- Reliable transportation
- Completion of a series of medication injections assisting in the successful conception of an embryo implantation through In Vitro Fertilization
